We investigated how choline magnesium trisalicylate (CMT) helps alleviate bone pain in patients with metastatic cancer. In a carefully designed study involving 26 participants, we compared CMT against a placebo in a crossover format, measuring pain relief at multiple intervals after dosing.
While we observed a significant reduction in pain just one hour post-treatment with CMT, other comparisons showed improvements that didn't reach statistical significance. This suggested that CMT might assist in managing bone pain, potentially complementing traditional opioids, but overall effectiveness is still under exploration.

Bone pain is a discomfort or ache that originates within the bones themselves and can range from mild to severe. It is different from muscle or joint pain, as it directly affects the skeletal structure. Bone pain can be caused by a variety of factors, including injuries, medical conditions such as osteoarthritis or osteoporosis, infections, or tumors. Symptoms may vary depending on the underlying cause but often include a dull, penetrating ache that may worsen with movement or pressure.
If you're experiencing persistent bone pain, it’s essential to consult with a healthcare professional for a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Imaging tests like X-rays, MRI, or CT scans may be utilized to determine the root cause of the pain. Treatment can vary widely, ranging from medications to alleviate pain and inflammation to physical therapy or, in some cases, surgical interventions. Understanding the underlying cause is crucial to effectively managing bone pain and ensuring the best path to recovery.
Magnesium is a chemical element with the symbol Mg and atomic number 12. It is a lightweight, silvery-white metal that is a member of the alkaline earth metals group. Often classified as one of the most abundant elements in the Earth's crust, magnesium plays a crucial role in various biological functions and is essential for living organisms. In nature, magnesium can be found in large quantities, primarily in minerals such as dolomite and magnesite, and it is also present in seawater.
In terms of health benefits, magnesium is vital for numerous metabolic processes, including energy production, DNA synthesis, and muscle function. It contributes to bone health, helps regulate blood pressure, and supports bone formation by promoting the effects of vitamin D. The recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for magnesium varies by age and gender, but it is generally important to include magnesium-rich foods like leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and whole grains in your diet to ensure adequate intake. For those who may not receive enough magnesium through their diet alone, supplements are also available; however, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional before starting any supplementation.
Magnesium plays a crucial role in bone health and may help alleviate some types of bone pain, especially if the pain is related to deficiencies. This essential mineral aids in the regulation of calcium levels in the bone, which is vital for maintaining bone density and overall strength. Some studies have suggested that adequate magnesium intake may reduce the risk of osteoporosis and bone fractures, which are common causes of long-term bone pain. However, if you are experiencing significant or persistent bone pain, it's crucial to consult with a healthcare professional to identify the underlying cause.
While magnesium may provide support for bone health, it should not be viewed as a standalone treatment for bone pain. Incorporating magnesium-rich foods, such as leafy greens, nuts, seeds, and whole grains, can be beneficial in supporting bone health. For some individuals, magnesium supplements may also be considered, but it's important to do this under medical supervision to avoid potential side effects or interactions with other medications. Additionally, a comprehensive approach that includes proper nutrition, exercise, and other lifestyle factors is essential for managing bone health effectively.

Furthermore, several reviews highlight the importance of consulting healthcare professionals before combining these supplements with others, ensuring safe and effective treatment strategies Read Review. Users also mentioned they experienced improvements in their emotional well-being and anxiety levels while managing pain, which can be beneficial when dealing with chronic pain conditions Read Review. Overall, combining magnesium with thoughtful supplementation has received generally favorable feedback among users for alleviating bone and muscle pain.
When it comes to treating bone pain, research suggests that choline magnesium trisalicylate (CMT) may offer some relief for patients, particularly those dealing with conditions like metastatic cancer. A study involving 26 participants found that patients experienced significant pain reduction just one hour after dosing with CMT, although the overall effectiveness requires further investigation [3]. While this suggests a promising avenue, it's important to note that these results do not yet establish a definitive optimal dosage for magnesium regarding bone pain relief.
Another angle to consider is the use of magnesium in conjunction with other treatments, such as denosumab within a drug delivery system aimed at targeting osteoarthritis. This approach highlights the potential benefits of magnesium ions for bone formation, but again, further studies are necessary to pinpoint effective dosages and ensure efficacy in real-world applications [1]. Overall, while magnesium appears to play a supportive role in bone health and pain management, more research is needed to determine the optimal dosages specifically tailored for bone pain relief.
